Houston Texans promote George Godsey to OC

The Houston Texans are no longer the only NFL team without an offensive coordinator.

Coach Bill O'Brien announced Monday that quarterbacks coach George Godsey has been promoted to offensive coordinator.

O'Brien and Godsey ran the offense together last season. Now Godsey has the official title to show for it.

"He did a heck of a job last year," O'Brien said, "and he deserves this opportunity."

Their history goes back to Georgia Tech in 2001, when Godsey played under O'Brien. When O'Brien was promoted to offensive coordinator with the Patriots in 2011, he brought Godsey in as tight ends coach.

O'Brien wanted to take his right-hand man along to Penn State in 2012, but Bill Belichick blocked the move.

Godsey has essentially been groomed for the position in Texas. Now he's charged with ensuring that one of the trio of Ryan Mallett, Brian Hoyer and Tom Savage emerges as a viable starting quarterback capable of leading the Texans to the postseason.
