A year ago this week Arizona Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington was suspended for at least one year for violating the league's Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.
Washington's agent confirmed months ago that the 2012 Pro Bowler would apply for reinstatement, but there has been no update from the NFL.
"Until he becomes a Cardinal again," coach Bruce Arians recently told The Arizona Republic's Bob McManaman, "it's a waste of breath."
Arians noted two years ago that Washington had been "walking a very thin line" with his behavior. General manager Steve Keim released an atypically strong public statement last offseason, chastising Washington for putting the organization in a compromising position.
The Cardinals might not roll out the red carpet if Washington is reinstated, but there seems to be little question that the linebacker will rejoin the team once he's eligible.
Carson Palmer insisted last June that Washington would be welcomed back "with open arms."
Arians acknowledged to McManaman that the players want him back in the locker room and "that's fine by me."
There is one caveat, however.
Even if Washington's suspension is lifted, he still faces added discipline for a domestic violence charge.
In other words, Arians has no idea when Washington will be back on the field.
