LSU stakes claim to 'DBU' over Florida

Let the offseason scoreboard for hype videos show LSU 1, Florida 0.

A youtube.com clip declaring UF as "DBU" complete with highlights of its current defensive backs was released earlier this week. Among that group is junior cornerback Vernon Hargreaves, one of the elite cover men in the country who would make a proud addition to any program bold enough to dub itself as "DBU."

But LSU responded in a big way, releasing its own video supporting the Tigers as DBU not just with its current crop of defensive backs, but with its history of top draft picks at the position. Among those highlighted: Patrick Peterson, LaRon Landry, Eric Reid, and Morris Claiborne, all first-round picks, and Tyrann Mathieu, as well. The LSU official web site notes that 32 Tigers defensive backs (12 cornerbacks, 20 safeties) have been chosen in the draft during the Super Bowl era (since 1966).

Meanwhile, it's not exactly the best of timing for Florida to boast about anything, its secondary included. The Gators are coming off a 7-5 season in which the pass defense ranked No. 41 in the country, allowing 213 yards per game. Without Hargreaves, it would have been a lot more. No, the Gators would have been much better off going the historical route for its DBU claim, as LSU did. That could have included former first-round picks Matt Elam, Joe Haden, Reggie Nelson and Lito Sheppard.

Judge the videos for yourself, but the winner here is LSU by knockout.

LSU safety Jamal Adams, one of the top returning defensive backs in the SEC, got another dig in via Twitter:
