Now that the Dolphins have traded for Kenny Stills, signed Greg Jennings and drafted DeVante Parker in the first round, Rishard Matthews feels like the odd man out in Miami's suddenly crowded wide receiver room.
Matthews is now boycotting Dolphins voluntary workouts in hopes of forcing a trade or his release, reports The Miami Herald's Adam Beasley.
Matthews posted a vague message on his Twitter account Thursday, perhaps hinting at frustration with the organization's offseason moves.
"It's funny how people claim to want to do right by you," Matthews wrote. "In the end it's all just talk."
Originally a seventh-round draft pick in 2012, Matthews showed flashes of talent early in his career, highlighted by the 11 catches, 120 yards and two touchdowns he dropped on the Buccaneers in Week 10 of the 2013 season.
Since then, however, he has been limited to special teams and banished to the fifth receiver role.
The Dolphins pursued trade options for Matthews late last August, after The Miami Herald reported that the wide receiver's development had stalled due to "tardiness, lack of attention to detail and other issues."
Matthews has the talent to help another team as a "Z" or slot receiver if his head on his straight. A change of scenery would benefit both parties if the Dolphins can find a taker.
