The New York Jets are spending their final week of preparation before the NFL draft getting a close look at some of the top defensive prospects available.
But the latest one to meet with the club might raise some eyebrows.
Former Washington cornerback Marcus Peters is visiting the Jets on Tuesday, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. They're also hosting Florida pass rusher Dante Fowler and USC defensive lineman Leonard Williams this week. The Peters visit might come as a surprise to some, given that the Jetsinvested heavily in the cornerback position in free agency, adding All-Pro Darrelle Revis, veteran Antonio Cromartie, and fourth-year pro Buster Skrine.
Moves like that weren't a good sign for former first-round pick Dee Milliner, who is recovering from a torn Achilles, nor do they point to another draft investment in a player like Peters. Granted, Revis and Cromartie are veterans, but the Jets wouldn't have brought the two back to New York if they weren't convinced they were more than capable of performing well in the short term.
The Jets hold the No. 6 overall pick in the draft and, more in the range where Peters could be chosen, the No. 37 overall pick in the second round. NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah projects the Jets to pair Kentucky pass rusher Bud Dupree at No. 6 with wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham at No. 37 in his two-round mock draft.
Peters is one of the top cornerback talents in the draft, but questions about his character could hurt him on draft day. He was dismissed from the Huskies' program in November after having difficulty getting along with UW's new coaching staff, although he was welcomed back for Washington's pro day earlier this month.
