Matt Cassel hasn't been part of a playoff team since he guided Todd Haley's Chiefs to a 10-6 record in 2010.
Now embedded as a stopgap veteran passer with the Bills, Cassel says this year's Buffalo squad has more to offer than that Kansas City club from five seasons ago.
"The talent level of what we have here overall is much higher than what we had in Kansas City back in 2010," Cassel told WGR-AM on Tuesday, per the team's official website. "We had a steady running game. Dwayne Bowe had a fantastic year. He had like 18 touchdown catches and we had a strong defense and the combination of that always works together."
That AFC West-winning Chiefs team crumbled in the playoffs despite a pounding run game led by Jamaal Charles. Buffalo has the potential for an equally frisky backfield with LeSean McCoy and Fred Jackson on the payroll. Through the air, wideout Sammy Watkins stands out as one of the division's most promising young playmakers.
"We've got all the pieces to the puzzle here to be a successful football team," Cassel said. "You look at an outstanding defense, a great special teams and you add our offense with it ... all three have to complement each other, but at the same time our offense has the best skill players in all the league in my opinion."
... Except at the game's most important position.
New coach Rex Ryan has plenty to work with in Buffalo, but not much has changed in terms of how we view the Bills. Until they find a lasting answer under center, all glory in the AFC East channels through Foxborough.
