Report: Steelers, Chargers among next visits for Randy Gregory

Randy Gregory is doing a lot of explaining this month, trying to establish the difference between the Gregory who failed at least two drug tests in college, plus another at the NFL Scouting Combine, and the Gregory who will -- he says -- be a pro's pro.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and San Diego Chargers reportedly are the latest teams willing to listen.

Gregory is in San Diego this weekend for a pre-draft visit with the Chargers, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune, and will head to Pittsburgh next week, according to Yahoo Sports' Rand Getlin.

The Chargers hold the No. 17 overall pick of the draft, while the Steelers pick at No. 22. A pass-rusher is among Pittsburgh's draft needs, as third-year pro Jarvis Jones has failed to meet the expectations of being a first-round pick in 2013.

Whether Gregory is the right man for the job is an entirely different question.

With the failed drug test putting him in the first stage of the NFL substance abuse program before he's even put a helmet on, Gregory represents a greater risk for whichever team selects him. Still, his prolific talent could compel a team to pick him well before either Pittsburgh or San Diego get a chance. NFL Media analyst Brian Baldinger projects Gregory to be chosen No. 6 overall by the New York Jets.

The other two analysts who have updated their mocks since news of Gregory's positive drug test came to light, Lance Zierlein and Bucky Brooks, foresee the New Orleans Saints getting Gregory at No. 13.
