The New York Jets and New England Patriots continue to battle off the field, with cornerback Darrelle Revis in the middle of it all.
The Jets filed tampering charges against Patriots owner Robert Kraft for Monday's comments referencing Revis, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported according to a source informed of the Jets' plans. NFL spokesman Michael Signora declined comment Tuesday when contacted by NFL Media. ProFootballTalk first reported the story.
There are now dueling charges between the AFC East rivals because of comments about Revis. The Patriotsfiled a tampering charge against Jets owner Woody Johnson, who stated in a late December press conference that he would "love for Darrelle to come back" to New York. Johnson later said he "misspoke" and called Kraft to emphasize he would "never interfere in the contractual relationship of a player with another team."
In the ensuing months, Revis won a Super Bowl ring and received the guaranteed money he always dreamed of with the Jets. Kraft spoke Monday about the organization being "sorry" that Revis left town.
"We thought we made a very competitive offer, and I speak as a fan of the New England Patriots, we wanted to keep him, we wanted him in our system. And we have certain disciplines. We had hoped it worked out. It didn't," Kraft said from the NFL Annual Meeting in Phoenix. "He's a great player. The fan in me wishes he were still with us."
The league's tampering policy prevents "any interference by a member club with the employer-employee relationship of another club or any attempt by a club to impermissibly induce a person to seek employment with that club or with the NFL."
The Patriots' initial tampering charges remain pending.
