Landon Collins to work out for Carolina Panthers

Alabama safety Landon Collins, the top safety prospect in the 2015 NFL Draft, will perform for the Carolina Panthers in a private workout Tuesday. One of three Alabama underclassmen to enter the draft, Collins told al.com of his scheduled workout with Carolina, which holds the No. 25 overall pick of the draft.

Collins would be an interesting fit with the Panthers, whose two strong safeties are former Alabama players themselves -- aging veteran Roman Harper, 32, and Robert Lester, whose playing time slipped last year with the acquisition of Harper from the New Orleans Saints.

Lester and Collins, in fact, were teammates at Alabama for one season, in 2012.

But while the Panthers could benefit from a more competitive situation at safety, landing Collins might not be possible without at least a small trade-up in the draft. Collins is widely regarded as the draft's top safety prospect by NFL Media analysts, who all expect Collins to be gone before the Panthers' choice at No. 25 across six mock drafts.

Last October, an AFC scout told NFL Media's Albert Breer that Collins is a better player than two other former Alabama safeties who were first-round picks: Mark Barron and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.
