The draft arrows on cornerbacks Trae Waynes and P.J. Williams went in different directions following the NFL Scouting Combine last month, when Waynes ran a 40-yard dash more than a quarter of a second faster (4.31) than Williams (4.57).
Not surprisingly, the former Florida State star isn't going to let his combine time do all the talking.
Williams wrote in a pre-draft diary entry for USA Today that he will participate in 40-yard dash testing at the Seminoles' pro-day event on March 31.
"I'm much faster than 4.57 seconds in the 40-yard dash," Williams wrote. "I didn't feel like I was running like I was supposed to be. But I'm definitely going to run a much better time at pro day on March 31."
According to Williams, he was beset by an illness the day before his arrival for the combine in Indianapolis, and had a 100-degree fever that wasn't helped by the sub-zero temperatures that gripped Indianapolis during the week-long event. Still, Williams managed to deliver a 40-inch vertical jump and an 11-foot broad jump in other combine testing, both marks that ranked in the top five among cornerbacks.
However, his technique during position drills left something to be desired according to NFL Media analyst Bucky Brooks, who indicated Williams' pro day would be crucial to his hopes of moving into first-round consideration.
Williams ranks as the No. 33 prospect in the draft according to NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah's Top 50.
