The Eagles appear to have located a high-profile replacement for LeSean McCoy.
NFL Media's Albert Breer reported Sunday that, barring something unforeseen, Frank Gore will sign a three-year deal with the Eagles this week, according to a source involved in the process. The contract will guarantee the 31-year-old running back $7.5 million over the first two years.
NJ Advance Media first reported Sunday that the Eagles believed they could land a deal with Gore by Tuesday, the first day free agents are eligible to sign with new teams.
Philadelphia has a vacancy in its backfield after McCoy was traded in a blockbuster deal with the Bills last week. Darren Sproles, Kenjon Barner and Matthew Tucker are the only running backs currently under contract. Chris Polk received the minimum tender from the team.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that the 49ers believe they will not be able to re-sign Gore and have started the process of looking at other options. That development comes just one day after 49ers CEO Jed York told the San Francisco Chronicle he believed the Niners would "figure out a way" to keep Gore, who has eight 1,000-yard seasons in nine years with the Niners. New coach Jim Tomsula said last month at the NFL Scouting Combine that he was "a big Frank Gore guy."
