Chargers closing in on new deal for Brandon Flowers

The San Diego Chargers are making a hard push to keep one of their own under contract.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Saturday that the team is closing in on a new deal for cornerback Brandon Flowers, according to a source informed of the situation.

Flowers visited NFL Network this week to say that he was "hoping" to remain with the Bolts, telling the Around the NFL Podcast that he would rather not even test the open market. It appears he won't need to.

Our second-ranked free-agent cornerback behind Byron Maxwell, Flowers bounced back big time in 2014 after fizzling out due to a poor scheme fit with the Chiefs in 2013.

The 5-foot-9 defender is better suited for zone coverage than man-to-man, but Flowers showed valuable versatility last season playing both in the slot and outside.

We don't expect him to break the bank at age 29, but Flowers and Jason Verrett were a spicy combination when healthy this past autumn. The Chargers aren't about to let their man get away.
