Chiefs to re-sign LB Josh Mauga, per report

The Kansas City Chiefs are holding on to Josh Mauga.

The team plans to re-sign the linebacker to a three-year deal worth nearly $8 million, per ESPN.com.

Mauga was a major contributor last season, starting all 16 games and finishing fifth on the team in snaps, largely in relief of the injured Joe Mays.

After releasing Mays on Thursday, re-signing Mauga makes sense for a Kansas City defense that will line him up next to Derrick Johnson at inside linebacker in 2015.

He struggled against the run, but Mauga wound up leading the team in tackles last season. His familiarity with coordinator Bob Sutton's defense -- they worked together as members of the New York Jets -- allowed Mauga to step right into the lineup in Week 1.

His play from there made Mays expendable, giving the Chiefs a young option at the position to groom alongside Johnson and the recently franchise-tagged Justin Houston
