Woody Johnson got his franchise in hot water after he "misspoke" publicly about Darrelle Revis late last December, noting a desire to bring the corner back to the New York Jets, which led to tampering charges being filed.
Gang Green's owner is still hot on the pursuit of the corner's services, should he become available. However, now he's keeping those thoughts internally.
The New York Daily News reported Tuesday that Johnson has been involved in "serious internal discussions" with new Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan to push for Revis if he becomes a free agent.
New York desperately needs corners who can play press-man in new coach Todd Bowles' blitz-heavy scheme. Flush with cap space, the Jets could make a play to bring Revis back to the team that drafted him. (Wouldn't Jets fans swoon over the idea of bringing both Revis and Antonio Cromartie back in one big reunion?)
Bill Belichick, however, still holds all the cards in this game. And he's not one to help facilitate any positive feelings at the Jets facility. The Pats not franchise taggingDevin McCourty on Monday could be one indicator they expect to pay Revis a large lump sum in the short term.Â
