Michael Sam's next serious run at the NFL could be less than a month away.

A source familiar with the defensive end's thinking confirmed that he has been invited, and will attend, the NFL's first-ever Veteran Scouting Combine at the end of March.

"Path to the Draft" previews the 2016 NFL Draft by providing in-depth expert analysis of the top prospects and each teams' needs.

The news was first reported by ESPN.

"Glad to be a part of the NFL Veteran Free Agent Combine," Sam later tweeted. "Working hard to show up big time! Have a safe weekend all!"

The NFL's first openly gay player has been out of the league since the end of October, when he was released from the Cowboys' practice squad.

He has continued to train in the interim and, despite sounding open to playing in the CFL, had a strong preference to stay in the States.

Sam was originally scheduled to begin taping ABC's Dancing with the Stars, but has said that he will prioritize the veteran combine and any team visits over anything.

The 2014 SEC co-Defensive Player of the Year had three sacks in the preseason with the Rams.

Sam will obviously headline an intriguing first class at the veteran combine, a project aimed at giving a second chance to players who have washed out of the NFL too quickly.

While there was little doubt Sam would get the nod, the development guarantees him another opportunity to work out in front of NFL personnel, which he has been pushing for since his October release.
