National Signing Day: NFL draft history for five-star recruits

Jadeveon-Clowney-TOS-150131

National Signing Day is Wednesday, and the hoopla surrounding it makes it seem like Christmas in February for college football fans.

Signing lists will be perused, and there will be crowing about the great players each coaching staff reeled in. There will be especially loud crowing about five-star recruits who signed.

But being a five-star recruit is no sure thing when it comes to college stardom, much less NFL stardom. We went back and looked at each Rivals.com five-star recruit from 2002 (when their rankings started) through the 2011 class.

Here's what we found:

» 288 recruits were given five-star status from 2002-11. The 2002 class had the most five-star recruits, with 38; the 2003 and 2004 classes had the fewest, with 25 each. The average number of five-star recruits in a class was 29.

» 123 of the 288 five-star recruits were drafted (42.7 percent), and 45 went in the first round (16 percent).

» Nine five-star recruits from the 2011 class are in the 2015 NFL draft, but only LSU OT La'el Collins is considered a possible first-rounder. In addition, there are six five-star prospects from the 2010 class in the 2015 draft, but none is considered a potential first-rounder.

» Three former five-star recruits in that span -- Matthew Stafford, Cam Newton and Jadeveon Clowney -- have been the overall No. 1 draft pick. Clowney also was considered the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2011 class.

» FBS schools sign about 2,500 players every year, and about 30 are five-star recruits. That means a bit more than one percent of the players who sign every February are five-star guys.

» Not all the five-star recruits had a shot at being drafted. Two went to prison. A handful had to give up football because of injuries. More than a few never played a down of major college football because of off-field issues. One decided on a pro baseball career, and another chose pro track.

We also looked at the 2012 class, and 16 of the 32 five-star prospects are available in this year's draft.

Here's a year-by-year look at the five-star recruits and where (and when) they were drafted.
