Mike Maccagnan named new general manager of Jets

One half of the Jets' management rebuild is complete.

The team announced Tuesday that Mike Maccagnan has been named the team's new general manager. Maccagnan replaces John Idzik, who was fired last month after two years on the job.

"We interviewed a number of impressive, qualified candidates, but Mike Maccagnan clearly stood out," team owner Woody Johnson said in a team release. "Mike's attention to detail, strong personnel background and collaborative approach to evaluating players made it clear that he is the right choice to be the next general manager of the New York Jets."

Maccagnan comes to the Jets from the Houston Texans, where he served in a number of personnel roles. The Jets made a point to identify a candidate with scouting experience after the team's previous GMs -- Idzik and Mike Tannenbaum -- came from a salary cap background. A New Jersey native, Maccagnan had been the Texans' director of college scouting since 2011.

Maccagnan will report directly to Johnson, as will new coach Todd Bowles, as equal partners, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, via a source informed of the Jets' thinking. Maccagnan will have control over the 53-man roster and final say over roster moves, while Bowles will decide on the 46-man roster and who plays.

Maccagnan has direct ties to Charley Casserly, the former Texans general manager who, along with Ron Wolf, were hired by Johnson to lead New York's search for a GM and coach.

"Mike Maccagnan is an outstanding football man, one who is highly organized, and an excellent evaluator," Casserly said in a team release. "He is very thorough in his preparation and will do a terrific job for the Jets."
