Stanford cornerback Alex Carter, whose dad was a first-round pick of the Washington Redskins in 1993, has declared his intent to enter the 2015 draft.
"I talked it over with my family, and we decided it's time," he told the San Francisco Chronicle after Stanford won Tuesday night's Foster Farms Bowl. "I love these boys. It was great playing with them, and I'll miss them."
Carter's dad, Tom, played safety at Notre Dame and was an NFL cornerback for nine seasons; he played for Washington, the Chicago Bears and Cincinnati Bengals.
Alex Carter (6-foot-0, 202 pounds) has good size and is solid in run support. While he lacks elite speed, he does run well and is solid with his technique -- not surprising given his family background. He had one interception this season, and it came against Heisman winner Marcus Mariota, who tossed only two picks all season.
Carter suffered a torn labrum near the end of the 2013 season, and he told the Chronicle earlier that he had played most of this season at 80 to 85 percent effectiveness.
His size and physical nature make him a solid prospect, and his 40 time will be closely scrutinized during pre-draft workouts.
