Browns rule out Johnny Manziel vs. Ravens

Johnny Manziel's rookie season in Cleveland is a wrap.

Browns coach Mike Pettine told reporters on Monday that the first-round quarterback has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Ravens with the "significant" hamstring injury he suffered in a 17-13 loss to the Panthers.

Manziel left Sunday's game just before halftime after taking a massive shot from Carolina linebacker Luke Kuechly on a quarterback keeper.

Brian Hoyer took over from there, but the veteran passer spent much of the second half playing through the pain of a shoulder injury, the product of another earth-shaking Panthers hit.

Hoyer has not been ruled out for Week 17, but Pettine acknowledged the team might look for veteran help or turn to undrafted rookie Connor Shaw.

"If he does (start)," Pettine said of Shaw, "I wouldn't be surprised if he plays well."

As Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland noted, it marks the fifth straight year the Browns have started a third-string quarterback in the season finale.
