Report: Pats' Josh McDaniels getting vetted by Florida

With the way last offseason developed, it seemed Patriots offensive coordinator and former Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels could emerge as a top candidate for vacancies in 2014.

But according to one report, he'll also be in the running for one of the best collegiate openings.

Football Scoop says that McDaniels is currently being vetted as a potential head-coaching candidate at the University of Florida, where he would replace Will Muschamp. This is obviously just the start of a very long process, but it seems like the Gators are hoping for a little Bill O'Brien-type magic for their depleted program.

At the moment, it's unclear whether McDaniels would even be interested in a college job, especially having spent just two years as a graduate assistant in the college ranks. At 38, he's certainly young and energetic enough for the demands of a major college program, but would he rather another shot in the NFL?

When asked during Tuesday's conference call about the rumors, McDaniels had nothing to add about the rumors and says he had no idea about them.

Like his mentor and current boss, Bill Belichick, enough NFL executives are going to wonder if McDaniels simply needed a few more years to mature after his first stint as a head coach before breaking out. He'll join a crowded pool of talented coordinators this year, though, for what is projected to be a relatively small amount of openings.

McDaniels will need to weigh his chances there against a huge potential payday in the swamp.
