Eagles' first-round pick Marcus Smith isn't seeing field

Chip Kelly's first-round pick in 2014, Marcus Smith, has played in just 59 snaps this season.

On Sunday, when the Eagles were down by more than 30 points to the Packers in Green Bay, a situation that would normally be perfect for an active rookie to get some playing time, Smith did not see the field once.

At this point, it might be fair to ask: What gives?

"He needs to be more consistent from a practice standpoint," Kelly said Monday, via the Delaware County Daily Times.

Kelly has been hounded about his rookie all season. Smith did not play in either of Philadelphia's first two games and has never taken more than 18 reps in a single game.

Smith had a few opportunities -- injuries to Mychal Kendricks and DeMeco Ryans -- but Kelly hasn't shifted his opinion on the versatile pass rusher.

He was one of just three active members on the roster Sunday that did not play.

"He has to show the coaches that we have the trust in him to put him on the field," Kelly said.
