Burt Reynolds was a Florida State running back before starring in movies such as "Deliverance."

Former Florida State tailback Burt Reynolds has been chosen to "plant the spear" during pre-game festivities before the Seminoles play Boston College on Nov. 22.

He was known as Buddy Reynolds (and roomed for a time with Lee Corso) when he lettered at FSU in 1954 before knee injuries curtailed his career, and he eventually became an actor.

FSU made the announcement Wednesday.

Reynolds, 78, played high school football in West Palm Beach, Fla., and among his best-known movies are "Deliverance," "The Longest Yard," "Smokey and the Bandit," "Semi-Tough" and "Boogie Nights."
