Alex Smith strained shoulder; Beason's season over

The New York Giants' defense will be without stalwart Jon Beason for the rest of the season.

The linebacker will undergo season-ending surgery to repair his injured right foot, NFL Media's Kimberly Jones reported Monday. The procedure has not yet been scheduled.

Beason admitted last week it was "50-50" his season would be over. He first injured his foot over the summer but didn't go under the knife at the time.

Beason signed a three-year, $16.8 million contract this season after he helped key the Giants' defensive turnaround last season. New York hoped he'd provide leadership in the middle of the defense. Sitting at 3-4 and well behind in the NFC East, Big Blue will have to make hay the rest of the way without their leader.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin indicated that Jameel McClain will man Beason's middle linebacker spot moving forward, according to the New York Daily News.
