New York Jets coach Rex Ryan was agitated and seemingly disheartened when he faced the media Thursday night after the team's 27-25 loss to the New England Patriots. It turns out that Ryan let out some steam just before stepping in front of the cameras.
Kimberley Martin of Newsday writes that Ryan punched a wall on his way into the press conference, just after cursing under his breath. He then tried to compose himself and went to face reporters.
Ryan's team fell to 1-6 in a game where it controlled the ball for over 40 minutes, ran it for 218 yards and outgained the Patriots by 100 yards. But the Jetscouldn't make enough plays -- especially on defense -- and committed costly red zone penalties.
"I'm not shell-shocked at all, I'm a little upset because our record is what it is," Ryan said. "I think that's what it is. Shell-shocked? I'm not shell-shocked by any stretch. We did what we wanted to do on them. We were able to control the football, ran the football, did those things that it takes to win the game, then we just made too many darn mistakes. That's what it is. But shell-shocked? I'm not shell-shocked, by any stretch."
The team's sixth consecutive loss likely stamped a December expiration date on Ryan's days with New York.
The coach continues to get his players to compete, but with a lack of talent on the roster the weight of the stacked losses mounts.
"It's ridiculous to stand here after a loss and think where our team's at," Ryan said, per NJ.com. "It's not where this team should be."
