Carson Palmer, Cardinals in contract extension talks

The Arizona Cardinals have opened talks on a contract extension with Carson Palmer.

Cardinals general manager Steve Keim confirmed the team has been in discussion with Palmer's agent on a new deal.

"I won't get into specific points of the negotiations but we've had some dialogue with Dave Dunn," Keim said, according to The Arizona Republic. "(Palmer) has done a great job for us."

Palmer is in his second season with the Cardinals after being acquired in a trade with the Oakland Raiders in April 2013. His contract currently runs through the 2015 season, but voids if he is still on the roster five business days after Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1.

Palmer has been steady, if not spectacular, during his run with the Cardinals. He's completed 63.4 percent of his passes with 28 touchdowns and 22 interceptions in 18 starts. His passer rating is a respectable 86.0 and Arizona is 12-6 in his starts.

Palmer missed three games earlier this season with a nerve issue in his shoulder, but returned to action in Sunday's win over the Washington Redskins. New contract talks tells us the Cardinals aren't concerned about the long-term health of their 34-year-old quarterback.
