Lions cut kicker Alex Henery after missed field goals

Alex Henery's missed field goal at the end of Detroit's loss to Buffalo cost him his job. Well, that and the other four field goals he missed in two weeks.

Lions coach Jim Caldwell announced Monday that Henery had been released. Henery was 1 of 5 in two games since getting picked up off the scrap heap from Philadelphia. Lions kickers are 1 of 9 overall this season on kicks of 30-plus yards.

It's rare to see a kicker released on Monday before there were any tryouts, but clearly Caldwell decided that Henery didn't have a future with the team.

Recently released and former Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater -- who was cut Friday -- is a strong candidate to replace Henery, but the Lions could have competition for his services. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport relays the team will work out Jay Feely and Prater on Tuesday, per a source informed of the situation.
