New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith set himself up for some bad press (and a hit to his wallet) when he shouted profanity at an agitated fan at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham can surely relate to Smith's frustration. Beckham has missed five preseason games and four regular-season contests while recovering from a stubborn hamstring injury. Beckham, the No. 12 overall pick in the 2014 draft, hasn't been able to avoid the ire of Giants fans who have lost patience.
"Yeah, I've heard ... I wouldn't say I've heard it all, but I've heard quite an earful," Beckham said Monday, according to NJ.com. "It just comes with the game, it comes with your profession. You've got to take it as ... for me I take it as motivation. You ignore it as much as you can and keep moving forward."
Beckham originally injured his hamstring in June, then aggravated the injury in July and August. The Giants, fully aware another setback could place Beckham's entire rookie season in jeopardy, have taken a measured approach to his recovery. It's the right move, but also one that leaves Beckham open for more criticism.
"I don't think there's anybody who's been more frustrated than I have been, sitting out, coming in and leaving, this being your first year and you've already missed games and you've never missed a game in your life," Beckham said. "It's just not something that's easy to deal with."
Beckham's return might not be far off. He practiced on a limited basis Monday and is in the mix to make his pro debut on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. Fan favorite status is one big catch away.
