Never let it be said that Arizona Cardinals star Patrick Peterson's new contract making him the NFL's highest-paid cornerback has led him to forget where he came from.
Peterson was in Houston Saturday as an honorary captain for his former LSU teammates, where they defeated Wisconsin 28-24 at Reliant Stadium. LSU prides itself on its history of producing top defensive backs, so Peterson's return to the sideline was one that defensive back Jalen Mills and others took special note of.
"He's a legend in the DB room, so with him there, we had to live up to the saying," Mills said. "We call ourselves DBU."
Peterson made sure to catch up with Mills, who assisted the comeback victory with an interception. Peterson took a selfie with Mills and had some words of encouragement for the talented junior, who might, as Peterson did, have a difficult early-entry decision to make after the season regarding the NFL draft. Mills can play both cornerback and safety.
Since 2011 when Peterson was No. 5 overall pick of the Cardinals, LSU has had six defensive backs drafted, including first-round picks in Morris Claiborne and Eric Reid. Another, Peterson's Cardinals teammate, Tyrann Mathieu, was last year's October NFL Rookie of the Month.
Strong company, indeed.
