Mike Davis likely to be available vs. ECU, Steve Spurrier says

Two days after suggesting star running back Mike Davis would likely miss South Carolina's second game, Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier was much more encouraged by Davis' recovery on Tuesday.

"There's a good chance he's going to be available," Spurrier said, according to gogamecocks.com.

Spurrier said Davis has responded well to treatment on the bruised ribs that knocked him out of the Gamecocks' blowout 52-28 loss to Texas A&M. He had just 15 yards on six carries as his impact on the game was limited by the injury and Texas A&M's runaway lead, which forced South Carolina to pass more.

South Carolina plays East Carolina this weekend and will be looking to bounce back from a loss Spurrier has described as embarrassing.

Davis, a junior, rushed for 1,183 yards last season. While the Gamecocks could likely handle ECU without much help from Davis, his health for the following week's game against Georgia will be crucial. It will be the first SEC East game for both teams, and critical for either team's chances of winning the division and reaching the SEC Championship Game in December.

As such, don't be surprised if Davis' action against the Pirates is limited.
