Cam Newton visits prep quarterback injured in ATV accident

Carolina Panthers star quarterback Cam Newton visited Tuesday with a high school quarterback who recently had brain surgery.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Newton visited with Jaylend Ratliffe, who suffered a fractured skull in a July 30 ATV accident. Ratliffe is a senior at Laurinburg (N.C.) Scotland High and has committed to Georgia Tech.

"Cam went up to see him in the hospital (in Charlotte), and I thought that was awesome," Scotland coach Richard Bailey told the AJC. "He brought some stuff from the Carolina Panthers, and they took some pictures together. Cam stayed for around an hour. ... Jaylend was pleased to see him. That was nice. It really seemed to bolster his spirits."

Georgia Tech already has announced it plans to honor Ratliffe's scholarship commitment, though his playing career is uncertain. At one point, Ratliffe was put into a medically induced coma to reduce swelling on the brain, and he also was on a ventilator for a week.
