The Packers rewarded one of their most productive and underrated contributors with a four-year, $39 million extension for wide receiver Jordy Nelson. Will Green Bay do the same for Randall Cobb?
Entering the final year of his rookie deal, the fourth-year pass-catcher took a counter-cultural approach to his contract situation on Sunday, saying he doesn't necessarily deserve a new pact.
"I don't believe I've done enough, and I think that's on me," Cobb said, per ESPN.com's Rob Demovsky.
Cobb played in just six games last season because of the fractured tibia he suffered against the Baltimore Ravens in October. Still, he was on pace for more than 90 catches and 1,200 yards, and looms as a candidate to lead the league in receptions with James Jones now entrenched in Oakland.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport expects talks to commense next offseason. Cobb confirmed Sunday that he's heard nothing about a new deal from a Packers front office that hasn't hesitated to wave farewell to veteran pass-catchers before.
"My heart's in Green Bay; I love Green Bay," Cobb said. "The three years I've been here have been unbelievable. But I understand the business side of it. I've been here to see things happen in my room alone with Donald (Driver) and Greg (Jennings) and James. So I know the business, I understand that. So I'm trying to focus on day to day and handling what I can and letting the business side of it, letting my agent handle that and let it go that way."
We'd be surprised if Green Bay failed to make a serious play for Cobb, one of the game's most electric receivers and a primary target for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Waiting to pay the man could cost the Packers if Cobb blows up the way many expect him to in 2014.
