NOCSAE announces new concussion guidelines for helmet makers

The National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment announced Friday its new guidelines to cut down on concussions.

NOCSAE, which provides safety standards for sporting-goods manufacturers, told helmet makers they need to add rotational testing along with the current linear testing for headgear.

Scientists have said concussions are just as much the product of rotational movement of the head and neck as they are blows to the head.

NOCSAE announced at its annual meeting last year that new guidelines were forthcoming. The new standards are expected to take effect for helmets that are manufactured beginning in the fall of 2015, giving helmet makers a year to offer comments on the new standards.
