Wes Welker's departure to Denver was one of the seismic events of last offseason. That's why it's strange to consider that Welker's time with the Broncos is almost up.
Welker's two-year deal with Denver ends after this season, and The Denver Post believes it likely will be Welker's final year with the team. We agree.
The BroncosdraftedCody Latimer and signedEmmanuel Sanders in the offseason. Sanders is best used out of the slot, where Welker exclusively plays. Tight end Julius Thomas is essentially another slot receiver that should be on the roster for a long time.
At 33 years old, Welker is one of the older wideouts in the league. And there are more injury and performance-related questions about Welker now than any point in his career.
Welker suffered two concussions last season, and his performance wasn't quite the same even before the injuries. Welker had six games under 40 yards last season, including two in the playoffs. He's a valuable piece of the Broncos offense, but his production decreased dramatically when away from New England.
This feels like the ultimate "win-now" season in Denver, with executive John Elway adding DeMarcus Ware and Aqib Talib to an already-loaded veteran mix. This likely will also be Welker's last chance to get a ring with this group.
"That's one way to look at it, for sure," Welker said. "I don't really think of it that way, but at the same time, you understand -- we have a great opportunity. You don't want to let it pass by without being at your best and playing at your best."
