The St. Louis Rams continued their efforts to shed running backs Thursday as Daryl Richardson was released, according to the NFL's transaction wire.
Richardson, a 2012 seventh-round draft pick, played in eight games in 2013, amassing just 215 rushing yards at a 3.1 yards-per-carry clip after a solid rookie campaign. He was expected to contend for the No. 1 job as late as training camp last season. However, the emergence of Zac Stacy shelved those plans indefinitely.
With Stacy now firmly entrenched in the starting spot and the arrival of third-round selection Tre Mason as a change-of-pace back, the writing was on the wall for the talented 24-year-old Abilene Christian product to tote the ball even less in his third season.
After reportedly shopping prospective third-stringer Isaiah Pead to no avail during last weekend's draft, general manager Les Snead found his solution to thin the running back corps heading into the team's offseason workouts, which begin June 3.
