Vince Young released by Cleveland Browns

Vince Young's latest NFL comeback bid ended before it really began.

The Cleveland Brownsannounced Monday that Young was one of five players released by the team.

Quarterback Alex Tanney was also released.

The Browns' quarterback depth chart changed in a hurry when Johnny Manziel was selected with the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft on Thursday. They added another quarterback to the mix when they signed undrafted free agent Connor Shaw this weekend.

Monday's news is the latest career downturn for Young, the former Offensive Rookie of the Year who's now been released by three teams in the past nine months. Young has not taken an NFL snap in the regular season since 2011. It's telling that Cleveland thinks higher of Tyler Thigpen, a journeyman who signed on the same day as Young.

Manziel and Brian Hoyer figure to compete for the starting job in training camp, with Thigpen and Shaw battling for a roster spot. Young received no guaranteed money in his deal with the Browns.
