Seahawks' Kam Chancellor undergoes hip surgery

Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor was awarded a big contract extension last April, and then went on to be a key part of Seattle's Super Bowl run. His 2014 campaign will take a tougher path.

Chancellor underwent hip surgery about a month ago, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. The surgery was done on Chancellor's labrum. Chancellor hopes to be back for the preseason, but nothing is certain. (That's often code for: He's unlikely to be ready for the preseason.)

This is an injury to keep an eye on throughout the season. Chancellor is a unique part of a unique defense, a safety whose physicality would be tough to replace. Hip surgeries are always a concern, and any injury that limited Chancellor's ability to be physical would be a problem.

Chancellor is the perfect companion for Earl Thomas, who recently signed his own long-term deal. The Seahawks have a great backup at safety in Jeron Johnson, but the position is thin after that. Look for the Seahawks to draft someone at the safety position, and then put Pete Carroll's incredible system of developing defensive backs to work.
