LSU linebacker Tahj Jones, who was a senior last season and participated in the Tigers' pro day Wednesday, was shot Friday night, and police said former Tigers offensive lineman Brandon Winey -- who played 24 games in the NFL -- was the shooter.
Jones, 24, was listed in serious condition after being shot in Sulphur, La., about 20 miles east of the Texas border along Interstate-10. He is hospitalized in Alexandria, La., where he underwent surgery Saturday.
NOLA.com reported that Sulphur police arrested Brandon Winey, 36, a former LSU offensive tackle who was a sixth-round pick in the 2001 NFL Draft, by Miami. Winey was charged with attempted second-degree murder.
A report filed by Sulphur police said Winey shot Jones in the stomach after an altercation at an apartment that was the residence of a female friend of Jones. Winey fled the scene after the shooting, and Jones was taken to a local hospital by the female friend, according to the NOLA.com report.Â
Winey played in 24 games over three NFL seasons (2001, 2003-04) with Denver, Washington and the New York Giants.
Jones (6-foot-2, 205 pounds) is a Sulphur native. He started three games as a senior in 2013 after serving as a reserve in 2010 and 2011; he missed all but one game in 2012 for academic reasons. He finished his career with 47 tackles.
