Cleveland Browns to hold private workout with Derek Carr

The Browns will conduct a private workout with former Fresno State star Derek Carr on Monday as the NFL draft's "other guy" at quarterback is quickly gaining momentum as a first-round prospect.

Carr will apparently be the first quarterback to be put through a private workout by the club, according to cleveland.com.

With so much attention focused on the trio of Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel, UCF's Blake Bortles and Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater, speculation about Carr's draft status has relegated him to a distant fourth. But speculation and reality are often two entirely different things where the NFL draft is concerned, and the notion that Carr is as highly thought of as any of the draft's quarterbacks could simply be an established reality that has been slow to surface.

Browns coach Mike Pettine himself called Carr the draft's best natural thrower, and the Oakland Raiders are reportedly crazy about him.

The Browns are in a unique position to make a draft-day play for Carr.

Rising stock or not, Carr isn't expected to be a top-10 pick, and it's possible the club could look to trade down from the No. 4 overall pick to acquire Carr later in the round. It could also sit tight with its other first-round pick, at No. 26, and hope that Carr falls to that spot. And finally, general manager Ray Farmer could always package the No. 26 pick with additional draft considerations in an effort to secure Carr with an earlier pick in the first round.
