NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday that the team will sign Joe Webb as a backup signal-caller, according to a source involved in the process.
Rapoport was told that the Panthers love his skill set, which the team views as similar to Newton's. That's not something the gangly Derek Anderson offers the team, especially with Newton expected to miss some or all of offseason practices before returning for training camp.
Webb was a hybrid receiver/quarterback for the Vikings, starting four games under center for Minnesota since 2010 and catching 41 passes for 273 yards and four scores. He completed 88 of 152 attempts for 853 yards, three scores and five picks over his first two seasons, but hasn't thrown a pass since.
We had Carolina lined up to potentially grab a rookie quarterback in the draft to compete with Anderson, but Webb will do for now. He's no sure bet to stick on the roster, but he gives the Panthers a young player to work with during Ace Boogie's rehab.
