The Eagles announced Avant's release Tuesday.
The move does not come as a surprise. Avant was due a $1 million roster bonus on March 15. The Eagles save $3.25 million against the salary cap by cutting him loose.
After eight seasons in Philadelphia, Avant ranks 11th in team history with 297 catches for 3,646 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.
Although he's annually one of the most sure-handed receivers in the league and a respected team leader, Avant adds little playmaking ability after the catch and doesn't get vertical.
He was a better fit in former Philadelphia coach Andy Reid's offense than Chip Kelly's. It will be interesting to see if Avant resurfaces with Reid's Kansas City Chiefs or former Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg's New York Jets.
