Nick Folk receives franchise tag from New York Jets

Nick Folk was one of the heroes of the 2013 New York Jets.

That says something about the Jets, but it also speaks to Folk's consistency under pressure. On Friday, the Jets made sure Folk didn't leave town by placing the franchise tag on him.

The team announced the tag for Folk, noting his 91.7 percent accuracy on field goals in 2013. Folk hit his first 23 field goals last season, including three game-winners. Folk hit all three attempts over 50 yards and showed a knack for accuracy in tough conditions.

The franchise tag for kickers is $3.556 million, per NFL Media's Albert Breer. That's a fair number, and a one-year contract is preferable at a position where accuracy can come and go each season. The Jets aren't that far removed from believing they were one kicker away from a title. (Mike Nugent, anyone?) Now kicker is the least of their concerns.
