Andre Johnson: Houston Texans should trade No. 1 pick

The Houston Texans have a need at quarterback. They also own the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Teams that traded No. 1 overall pick prior to draft
Year Player selected Traded from Traded to
1941 Tommy Harmon Eagles Bears
1967 Charles "Bubba" Smith Saints Colts
1968 Ron Yary Giants Vikings
1974 Ed "Too Tall" Jones Oilers Cowboys
1975 Steve Bartkowski Colts ^ Falcons
1978 Earl Campbell Buccaneers Oilers
1979 Tom Cousineau 49ers Bills
1984 Irving Fryar * Buccaneers Patriots
1990 Jeff George Falcons Colts
1991 Russell Maryland Patriots Cowboys
1995 Ki-Jana Carter Panthers Bengals
1997 Orlando Pace Jets Rams
2001 Michael Vick Chargers Falcons
^ Baltimore Colts
* Bengals also were involved in trade

This all appears headed in a certain direction, but the team's longest-tenured player doesn't believe Houston should keep the pick.

"I have thought about different scenarios," Andre Johnson told KTRK-TV in Houston on Wednesday. "Me personally, if I had it, I would probably trade it, but that's just my opinion."

"That doesn't make it right," he added. "Doesn't mean they should listen to me, because I am not the GM. I have never had to sit in the draft room like that."

Teams don't often trade out of the No. 1 pick, but it's happened five times since 1990. The most recent occurrence was 2001, when the San Diego Chargers sent the first pick to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for a first- and third-rounder. The Falcons drafted Michael Vick, while the Chargers selected LaDainian Tomlinson four picks later.

Whatever the Texans do, it would be a surprise if they didn't address quarterback at or near the top of their draft class. If they fall in love with a signal-caller over the next three months, they might be less inclined to move out of the Radio City Music Hall pole position.
