After the bumbling trio of Christian Ponder, Matt Cassel and Josh Freeman led the Vikings to a last-place finish in the NFC North, we fully expect this front office to give the team's new play-caller something fresh to work with in 2014. Turner agrees.

"Quarterbacks come from a lot of different spots," he told reporters Thursday. "A third-rounder wins the Super Bowl and there's some pretty good players who weren't drafted high. I think everybody is in agreement: We're trying to add a young quarterback to the organization. So, you just gotta make sure it's a good one wherever you get him."

NFL Media draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah correctly pegged the Vikings as "very unsettled" under center, adding "I could see them going in that direction" with the eighth overall selection in May. Minnesota, of course, will face competition. The Texans, Jaguars, Browns and Raiders all pick ahead of the Vikes and loom as logical candidates to take a passer.

Turner has long favored cannon-armed quarterbacks who can flip the switch in his aggressive vertical passing scheme.

That's not Ponder's strength -- not by a long stretch. One way or another, Ponder will face stiff competition this offseason for a job the new coaching staff doesn't sound convinced he should have.
