Washington's Cyler Miles and Damore'ea Stringfellow -- projected starters at quarterback and wide receiver, respectively -- were indefinitely suspended Thursday, Huskies coach Chris Petersen announced.
The two were suspended for an unspecified violation of team rules. Spring practice begins March 4 for the Huskies.
The Seattle Times reported on Wednesday that two unnamed Huskies football players were being investigated for an alleged assault during an incident near campus on Sunday. The suspects reportedly were identified by the alleged victim after he and a friend looked at Washington's football roster online. No charges have been filed nor any arrests made.
Miles (6-foot-4, 213 pounds), a redshirt freshman, was the backup to starting quarterback Keith Price in 2013, and with Price graduating, Miles was expected to enter spring practice as the starter. Miles started one game in '13, against Oregon State, when Price was hurt, and threw for 162 yards and a touchdown in a 69-27 rout of the Beavers. Miles, from Denver, was a national top-125 player in the 2012 recruiting class and considered one of the top three dual-threat quarterbacks in the nation as a high school senior.
Stringfellow (6-3, 225) caught 20 passes as a true freshman during the '13 season, and he started the final three games, including a Fight Hunger Bowl win over BYU. Stringfellow, from the Los Angeles suburbs, was a national top-75 player and a top-10 receiver in the '13 recruiting cycle.
Washington has lost many of its offensive weapons from this season. Along with Price, leading receiver Kevin Smith is graduating. Starting tailback Bishop Sankey, who rushed for 1,870 yards and 20 TDs, and starting tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, who had 36 receptions and led the team with eight touchdown catches, turned pro a year early.
Jaydon Mickens and Kasen Williams are solid receivers, but Stringfellow's loss would be felt at wide receiver. The starting quarterback in Miles' absence likely would be Jeff Lindquist, who played sparingly in two games and didn't throw a pass as a redshirt freshman this season. He also was a touted recruit but isn't nearly as mobile as Miles.
