Kyle Shanahan landed on his feet in Cleveland after all.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Saturday that the Browns would hire Shanahan as their offensive coordinator, according to a source informed of the team's plans. Fox Sports first reported the news.
The team confirmed the hiring Monday.
Earlier in the process, the team had moved on from Shanahan after he was very blunt and honest in his interview, according to Rapoport. Apparently, the Browns were initially turned off, but reconsidered.
Shanahan spent the past four seasons as the Washington Redskins' coordinator under his father, Mike Shanahan. Kyle was the Houston Texans' OC the two seasons prior.
According to reports, the younger Shanahan was criticized in Washington for his play-calling after quarterback Robert Griffin III injured his knee.
In Cleveland, the quarterback situation is a big question mark. All signs point to the return of Brian Hoyer, who played well prior to injuring his knee. The statuses of 2012 first-round draft pick Brandon Weeden and veteran Jason Campbell are up in the air.
In all likelihood, the Browns will use their No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft on a quarterback. It has been rumored that the Browns brass is enamored with Texas A&M signal-caller Johnny Manziel. Shanahan's use of the zone-read offense in Washington could mesh well with Manziel's skill set, if that is the direction the Browns go in the draft.
