Dolphins owner Stephen Ross released a lengthy statement late Thursday night that read in parts like a job listing on Monster.com. The statement made it clear the new GM will have control over the roster -- the same power held by Jeff Ireland, fired Tuesday after six years on the job.

"The new general manager will have autonomous responsibility for the 53-man roster and selecting players during the draft and will report to me," the statement read. "First and foremost, this person must have a passion for the game and demonstrated player evaluation expertise. They will need to be a person who is a collaborative team player that puts the organization first.

"Regardless of reporting structure, the relationship between the general manager and coach Philbin must be one of trust, respect, and collaboration, and this will be an area we will look closely at during the process. This individual also must be a person with integrity who is open-minded and creative."

Ross additionally revealed that former Kansas City Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson will assist the team in locating Ireland's replacement. Peterson will not have a role with the team after the search is complete.

"Carl and I have had a business relationship for almost 30 years dating back to the USFL, and I have tremendous respect for his experience and judgment on team-building and football operations," Ross said.

The owner added that he and coach Joe Philbin are running football operations during the search and continue to conduct interviews in the search to find Mike Sherman's successor as offensive coordinator.

UPDATE: The Dolphins completed interviews with three GM candidates, the team announced Friday. They were Brian Gaine, assistant GM with the 'Fins, Omar Khan, director of football and business administration with the Steelers and Jason Licht, vice president of player personnel with the Cardinals.
