Packers' Mike McCarthy: Dom Capers is 'outstanding'

Mike McCarthy is not looking to make major changes to his coaching staff. While the Green Bay Packers coach wouldn't announce anything official at his year-end news conference Wednesday, defensive coordinator Dom Capers' job appears to be safe.

GMC Never Say Never Moment

Aaron Rodgers' fourth-down TD to Randall Cobb put the Packers in playoffs after a win in Week 17. Was it the best moment of 2013?

"Dom Capers is an outstanding football coach," McCarthy said with his voice rising. "No one will be evaluated today. We'll go though this just like last year; you guys did this to me last year.

"I'm not going into this thing looking to make big changes, but I'll tell you one thing. When I go though this process, there's things you really like about your program. ... I think Dom Capers is an outstanding football coach and I'm glad he's on our staff."

We're not sure why McCarthy couldn't just say that Capers would be back, but he was clear enough with his intentions. McCarthy isn't looking to make big changes, and removing Capers would be the biggest change possible. Capers' defense dealt with a ton of injuries all season, but it underperformed, especially in the secondary.

McCarthy also made it obvious he has no issues with his offense.

Pepsi NEXT Rookie of the Year

Eddie Lacy set Packers rookie records with 1,178 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns. Was it the best rookie performance of 2013?

"I felt this was going to be the best offense we ever had here. I thought we were going to go past 2011," McCarthy said.

To close out the session, McCarthy was asked if his offense can now win in any conditions.

"Hell yeah. Don't you think so?" McCarthy said before referencing the vastly improved running game. "I'd put our offense up against anybody's."

We can't disagree. The Packers offense should be among the NFL's best next year. The defense remains the big question.
