Ken Whisenhunt won't interview with Houston Texans

A playoff bid for the San Diego Chargers has cost Ken Whisenhunt a chance at a head coaching job.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Houston Texans have dropped plans to interview the Bolts offensive coordinator, per a source informed of the Texans' plans, now that San Diego is in the postseason mix.

The Texans hoped to meet with Whisenhunt on Monday, but NFL rules dictate that an interview can't take place until next week at the earliest.

That hoists up Penn State coach Bill O'Brien as the clear choice in Houston, Rapoport was told. The Texans, who interviewed O'Brien earlier this month, set an internal deadline of Tuesday to find their new coach.

O'Brien was loosely linked to the coaching vacancy in Cleveland as well, but Browns CEO Joe Banner indicated Monday that the team wouldn't interview any candidates they met with last year.

The Texans began their search weeks ago, and clearly have a first choice. We'll find out Tuesday if Houston gets its man.

We break down all the Week 17 action and look ahead to the playoffs in the latest "Around The League Podcast."
