NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported late Sunday night that the Texans wanted to interview San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt on Monday, according to a source with knowledge of the team's plans. However, with the Chargers making the playoffs, NFL rules dictate the interview can't take place until next week at least.
The question Texans owner Bob McNair and general manager Rick Smith must answer is whether they want to wait for a chance to interview Whiz or move forward before the opportunity arises.
Penn State coach Bill O'Brien is one of the leading candidates for the Texans' job and his name also will be linked to other coach openings -- including the Cleveland Browns' job that opened up Sunday night.
When the Texans fired coach Gary Kubiak before the season finished, they got the jump on other teams that will become coach-less on "Black Monday." It remains to be seen whether they will give up that advantage and wait to interview Whisenhunt or move in another direction.
