Baylor, head coach Art Briles agree to contract extension

Baylor's Art Briles is the mastermind behind the nation's No. 1 scoring offense.

Baylor head coach Art Briles has been discussed as a potential candidate to take over as head coach at Texas, USC, and even in the NFL. But after agreeing to a 10-year contract extension, it appears Briles will be staying put for the foreseeable future.

Briles and the Baylor Board of Regents agreed to a new deal that essentially adds three years to his existing contract, which would now carry over until 2023, the Waco Tribune reported. It will feature a raise that will pay Briles a salary that ranks among the top one-third of Big 12 coaches, ESPN reported.

The deal makes sense for both sides. A former Texas high school coach with a 41-30 record in six seasons, Briles has lifted Baylor to an 8-0 start for the first time in school history and the Bears are No. 5 in the latest BCS standings. Briles has turned the school into an offensive powerhouse and has legitimate NFL talent on both sides of the roster, boosting the school's national profile. With a new stadium set to open next season, there is no reason Briles and Baylor cannot continue their upward surge.
